Metaplanet strengthens its bitcoin strategy

The Tokyo-based investment firm Metaplanet, often referred to as Japan's answer to MicroStrategy, continues to make waves in the Bitcoin world. The company, which in 2024 decided to make Bitcoin a strategic reserve asset, has quickly become one of the most high-profile institutional names in Asia within crypto.

On May 19, Metaplanet announced that it had purchased an additional 1,004 BTC, valued at approximately $104.3 million – their second-largest single purchase to date. This brings their total holdings to 7,800 BTC, equivalent to over $800 million at today’s value.

This latest purchase comes just one week after Metaplanet acquired 1,241 BTC for $129 million. To finance its purchases, the company has issued zero-coupon bonds – most recently its 15th bond series worth $15 million. The goal is clear: to reach 10,000 BTC by the end of the year.

Asia’s Largest Public Bitcoin Holder

With this latest acquisition, Metaplanet has cemented its position as the largest publicly listed company in Asia holding Bitcoin, and the tenth largest globally. It has now surpassed El Salvador, whose national treasury holds 6,181 BTC.

Investor Confidence on the Rise

The increased focus on Bitcoin has not only strengthened Metaplanet’s balance sheet – it has also impacted the company’s stock price. After the latest purchase, the stock rose 15% on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Additionally, the company reported record results for Q1 2025, with revenues of 877 million yen (around $6 million), an 88% increase, mainly thanks to its Bitcoin strategy.

A Signal of Institutional Adoption

Metaplanet’s enthusiastic bet on Bitcoin clearly shows that more and more institutions are viewing cryptocurrencies – especially Bitcoin – as a legitimate and long-term asset on their balance sheets. It signals a shift in how global companies view capital management in a digital age.
