Michael Saylor burns over 17,000 bitcoin
2025-04-01
Michael Saylor, arguably the biggest name in the Bitcoin world, has done it again. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, he revealed in classic Saylor fashion, a mix of brilliance and subtle frustration over the world’s inability to “get it” that he has burned the keys to more than 17,000 BTC.
Yes, you read that right. Seventeen thousand bitcoin, gone forever. Or…?
In a recent interview with CoinDesk, he revealed in classic Saylor fashion, a mix of brilliance and subtle frustration over the world’s inability to “get it” that he has burned the keys to more than 17,000 BTC. Yes, you read that right. Seventeen thousand bitcoin, gone forever. Or…?
Saylor, founder of MicroStrategy, now simply Strategy ("because they’re not micro anymore"), calls it his life’s work:
"If I burn those keys then I have made everybody in the network that much richer and more powerful forever.”
At first glance, destroying the keys to billions worth of bitcoin might seem insane. But think about it: What does this actually mean for the network?
A pledge to Bitcoin and the future
Saylor is doing what central banks would never dare: Instead of diluting value by printing more, he’s removing assets from the system. He’s reducing supply and in a world of scarcity, that makes what remains even more valuable.
By permanently taking 17,000 BTC out of circulation, he’s making a statement that these bitcoin will never be sold and a trust in the network big enough to sacrifice for it.
For years, people have speculated about Saylor’s strategy to accumulate massive amounts of Bitcoin. Would he one day sell it all and crash the market? Now we know: He never planned to sell. He planned to give.
Brilliance or madness?
They say the line between genius and insanity is razor-thin. This is yet another example of how Bitcoin inspires both boldness and vision. Saylor picks up where Satoshi Nakamoto left off – honoring the principles of limited supply, personal responsibility, and trust in code.
By locking away a fortune forever, he’s strengthening the network and showing us all: Bitcoin isn’t just money, it’s a system worth protecting.
And yes, Bitcoin is in the spotlight. Again.
The people's money rises, while central banks continue printing and quietly eroding our time, labor, and future. Saylor does the opposite. He says:
I take nothing, I give. And in doing so, we all win.
